WEEK 9

Project 2 (Part B)

Photo Manipulation: Cyborg Edit

 Editing Process
I've decided to explain the transformation process in three separate parts (arm, face, and finishing touches) for an easier read.

ARM
Before jumping into the process of editing, I had to find pictures of robotic arms to be used. Shown below are the pictures that I've used to replace parts of my arm and thumb.

Figure 2.5: Arm (Source: reddit)

For the arm, I had to cut out a chunk of my arm to make room for the new robotic arm. To do this, I used the pen tool and mask the part I wanted to remove. Then, I placed a photo with the same background, to patch up the empty space. I added a cross-section at the lower part of my arm too, using the brush tool. Next, I put the robotic arm (figure 2.5) in, I've cropped and distorted it to fit my arm. Apart from that, I also tweaked the levels and the hues of the robotic arm to look like it had light blue highlights. Moving on, I added a glass-like shell around the robotic arm, the glass-like was taken from a glass cup, I distorted and warped the shape to match the missing part of my arm. I also put in glow to further emphasize the futuristic feel of the arm. Take a look at the process below.

Furthermore, I repeated the same steps on my thumb using the photo shown in figure 2.4. Apart from that, I added "tattoo" lines on my palm and the lower part of my arm. I used the pen tool to draw out the line in a new layer, applied brush strokes, load selection, and applied layer mask on the main picture. Then, added effects to it by adjusting bevel and emboss, drop shadow, colour overlay and outer glow.

FACE
For the face, I've decided to edit my eyes, as I've mentioned in the rationale, I've also decided to edit a part of my face because I wanted to further emphasize the fact that I am a cyborg. Shown below are the images I've used for this part of the transformation.

Figure 2.9: Inner Face (Source: akspic.com)

As a start, I put in the Iron Man arc reactor (Figure 2.8) as my new eye, I proceeded to add a glow-y effect to it by drawing a circle and applying gaussian blur. Then, I had to draw lines on my face to illustrate that my face is actually an outer shell or sorts. I did the lines using to pen tool, applied brush strokes, load selection and masked the selected strokes on the main layer. I added effects to it too, like bevel and emboss, inner shadow, colour overlay and added a separate glow, so the lines look like they're illuminating. As for the separated piece of my face, I masked out the part I wanted to separate, created edges on the masked out piece using the brush tool. After that, I inserted Figure 2.9 under the masked out piece of the face, cleaned the edges and added glow as a separate layer.

FINISHING TOUCHES
For the finishing touches, I added smoke to my mini cigar and tweaked the lighting and colours of the overall picture. I wanted the edits and the subject to stand out more so I added radial gradient (white as center) and linear gradient (black on the sides), then used multiply and soft light blending modes respectively. Apart from that, I tweaked the colours to a subtle cooler tone using the photo filter feature. Finally, I added a purple-blue gradient and used soft light blending mode to complement my cyborg edit.

Project 2 (Part A)

Digital Collage: Self-Titled

 Progress

Third Draft (Final)
For my third and final draft, it's hugely influenced by my current state of mind, which is messy and agitated. So, I wanted to reflect that in my artwork, which is why the references that I found (Figure 1.1) is much more messy and colourful. Due to the fact that this is my final draft I will explain in detail of the process of producing the artwork. Shown below are the images used in the artwork.

 Process

STEP ONE
  • Mask out frame
  • Mask out self
  • Flip self horizontally
  • Duplicate self layer
  • Put frame in between two self layers
  • Adjust levels, saturation, add noise of self and frame
  • Add colourful background (Blending mode: Pin Light)
Figure 1.6: Step One

STEP TWO
  • Add "Agite" textured image
  • Adjust blending mode to Subtract
  • Add dark rectangle on face to make face look more prominent (Blending mode: Colour Burn)
  • Highlight eyes with neon pink strip (Blending Mode: Colour)
Figure 1.7: Step Two

STEP THREE
  • Add tape to the sides of the collage
  • Adjust hue and saturation of the tapes, opacity too
  • Add plastic texture (Blending Mode: Luminosity)
  • Adjust opacity of texture, adjust levels
  • Adjust vibrancy, brightness and contrast of overall artwork
